sfp21 Planet Boelex “Moments”

“An ever-changing undercurrent runs throughout this new work from the Finnish
electronic musician, Planet Boelex. Always unhurried, often playful, and endlessly
tumbling through darkness and light, the melodies within Moments are on a course
to take you down deep.

This is music that carries great strength, and yet presents itself effortlessly.
The secret is in the structure, which is never obvious but handled with great
precision. In Moments, a collection of original instrumentals and complemented by
a fine guest mix and an inspired rework, Planet Boelex invites you to drift into a
realm you’ll be sure to occupy for a long time to come.” — Matt Whyman

sfp20 Planet Boelex “Exist”

Exist marks the return to this world of the Finnish electronic musician,
Planet Boelex. His decision to disappear from the scene following the acclaimed
2010 release, Raja, served to dismay and perplex. Artists with integrity tend
to retire when they have nothing more to say, and yet here was one consistently
pushing at frontiers. Perhaps his reasons should remain unexplained. This way,
we can submit to these six new tracks as if they’ve just floated in from some
other realm.

From the opening notes, this is a listening experience designed to evolve. Where
Planet Boelex excels is in drawing you back again and again to make endless new
discoveries. There is in fact a complex musical gravity at work here. Melodies
rise and fall outside of conventional rhythms, sailing with trusted collaborators
at times, and the result is quietly awe-inspiring. Whether or not we hear more
from Planet Boelex in future, Exist is a timeless offering.” — Matt Whyman

“From the farthest parts of the world, XPURM brings a unique blend of piano and strings
to Soft Phase. “PRUMX” is a stunning work, a cinematic ambient soundtrack for all your
heartaches and hopes.

The piano is XPURM‘s primary instrument, with melodies and chords showing influences from
modern day composers and past classical masters; from Winston to Brickman to Beethoven.
XPURM’s technical dexterity is extraordinary, but he also has a very soft, warm touch: these
intimate solo concerts resonate at a deep level. A single pool of light around the performer,
floating in a serene sea of velvet-black space.

Piano, synthesized pads, acoustic strings, and luscious reverb — XPURM seamlessly, soothingly
melts them into a wonderful, gloriously uplifting work. Gentle, brassy violin strains swell
into a spritely, almost playful, ivory arpeggio; then simmer into a hushed whisper, as the
piano recedes into the distance, echoes drifting in from far away. A dusky orchestral anthem
closes the record, chasing away the winter rainstorm, leaving the heavens fresh and pure.
The last scattered piano notes twinke like stars. Midnight comes softly in this place.”

“Soft Phase returns from its hiatus with another album by Spanish artist Outra-G.
Seiren is a series of brief sketches; music for slowly falling through sunlit
clouds. Outra-G blends hesitant, stuttering beats, reverb-drenched melodies,
and breathy whispers. Like a favorite daydream, every half-remembered moment is
somehow familiar — dappled light and forest shadows, summer hail, gentle
breezes. Let Seiren take you on this wondrous journey.” — Joshua Saddler

sfp17 Outra-G “Light Drops EP”

cover artwork by Sony G. (Uselabs)

audio preview (medium quality):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

“Spanish artist Outra-g debuts on Soft Phase with a surpassingly lovely EP. “Light Drops”
is a sonic tour of re-imagined lunar landscapes. We launch with shimmering, warbling chords
and subsonic, throbbing bass, our engines humming as Outra-g flies us low over blinding
white deserts, all sharp-edged shadows and faint radio chatter. Crackling, hissing wet
percussion accompanies us as we skim across strange new jungles, dipping down to the
edge of a glittering ocean, its churning tides foaming with electrofuzz. Steady, distorted
beats and blips, like far-flung light drops from distant stars, rain down, softening the edges
of ancient craters, gently reshaping the moon’s face.

The album closes with a look back at Earth, a fragile jewel hanging in velvet-black space,
its jumble of clouds and whirlwinds slowly spinning across the deep blue.” — Joshua Saddler
